SCHOOL
NURSING
The Summit County Health District has a long history of providing
school health services in Summit County. Although the focus
has changed over the years due to changes in communicable diseases,
the nature of handicapping conditions and the family itself, this
program continues to address the total physical, behavioral and
psychological needs of the students.
The school nurse's role includes working with school administrators
to plan and organize the school health program, including wellness
policy development and implementation. Activites include developing
and directing the delivery of health services, addressing health-related
needs of students in the building and promoting the maintenance
of a school environment that safeguards the health, safety and general
well-being of the school community. |

FAMILY
LIFE EDUCATION
Family Life Education is a 7-week course taught to 5th graders
by specially trained public health nurses. The focus is to prepare
students for the changes of adolescence. Schools contract with the
health department for this course. A parent meeting is held before
classes begin so that parents can ask questions and become familiar
with the program.
The curriculum includes discussion
of typical changes of puberty, reproduction, the student’s
role in his or her family. Appropriate communication with parents
and other trusted adults is encouraged so that students will be
able to share concerns and ask questions about their changing bodies.
Controversial questions are referred back to the student’s
parent or other trusted adult.
To encourage positive health choices, the course emphasizes
that every choice a person makes has a consequence and that students
need to become responsible for their own health.
