"I live in Akron.  Why doesn't your health department provide services to me?
There are actually three health departments in Summit County.  The jurisdiction of the Summit County Health District encompasses the communities that do not fall within the city boundaries of Akron and Barberton/Norton.   Residents in Akron are served by the Akron Health Department and residents of Barberton and Norton are served by the Barberton Health Department.

"Where are you located?"
The main location of the Summit County Health District is at 1100 Graham Road Circle on the Stow/Cuyahoga Falls border, just off Route 8.  We are next to the Red Lobster restaurant. For MapQuest directions, please click here.

"What are your hours?"
We are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 4:00, and are closed on weekends and holidays.  There are extended hours for some clinic services; please click here to view the clinic schedule.  We have an answering service that directs urgent calls during off-hours; the phone number to reach the after-hours service is the same as our main number (330) 923-4891.

"Do I need an appointment to be seen at the clinic?"
In most cases, YES.  Walk-in services are available at our immunization clinics, but patients with an appointment will be seen before walk-ins.  In order to avoid a lengthy wait, it's always a good idea to make an appointment.  For appointments at any of the clinic locations, please call (330) 926-5713.  Click here for information on our clinics.
"Do you take Medicaid?"
Yes.  We accept Medicaid HMOs, Medicare and some Medicare HMOs.  Private insurances are not accepted.  Please call

"My child is sick.  Can I bring him/her to the clinic to be seen?"
No, we can't see sick children in the clinic; we don't provide acute care.  However, you can call our Tele-Health line at
(330) 926-5615 for alternate resources.
"My child already received a vaccine against chickenpox.  Why does he/she need another one?"
"Breakthrough" cases of chickenpox have been seen in children who have received one dose of varicella vaccine.  To ensure protection, the first dose is given preferably at 12-18 months of age.  A second dose is now recommended at 4-6 years of age.  Each dose of varicella should be separated by at least 3 months.
"Is Hepatitis A vaccine required for school entrance?"
No. Currently Hepatitis A vaccine is only a recommendation.

Why should my daughter receive the HPV vaccine when she isn't sexually active?
It's important to vaccinate girls before they become sexually active.
Is a bird flu pandemic really going to happen?
Many scientists believe it is a matter of time until the next influenza pandemic occurs. However, the timing and severity of the next pandemic cannot be predicted, so it is important to be prepared.  There are numerous resources available to help individuals prepare for a pandemic.  You can visit the Pandemic Influenza page on this site for more information.
What is the Health District doing to prepare for an outbreak?
The Summit County Health District created the Office of Emergency Preparedness in May 2006 to address emergency planning and response needs related to public health emergencies. Our mission is to strenghthen our capacity to respond to public health emergencies. We do this by collaborating and coordinating with county, regional, state and national partners to prepare coordinated responses to pandemic, natural and man-made disasters.   More information can be found on the Emergency Preparedness pages of this site.

What can I do to protect myself and my family during a pandemic?
You can prepare for an influenza pandemic now. You should know both the magnitude of what can happen during a pandemic outbreak and what actions you can take to help lessen the impact of an influenza pandemic on you and your family.   More information and helpful checklists can be found on the Pandemic Influenza page on this site.
How can I register a complaint with the Health Department?
You can contact our Environmental Health division at (330) 926-5600 between 8:00 and 4:00 Monday through Friday, or visit the Nusiance Complaint page on this site to email your concerns to the appropriate party.
How do I get a food license?
The Food Safety Program must review, approve, and inspect all new or extensively remodeled food operation construction projects.  The review process may take as long as thirty days, so it is suggested that plans be submitted as soon as possible.  You can visit the Food Safety page on this site for applications and more information.
